Fiber Operations

Geoff Myers

Category: Fiber Optics

Length: 8 hours

Prerequisite: It is recommended you have a basic knowledge of voice, data, and Internet communications

Optical fibers have played a key role in making possible the extraordinary growth in world-wide communications that has occurred in the last 25 years and is the key technology in the proliferation of the Internet. Using hair-thin strands of glass combined with high-speed lasers, fiber optics provides enormous information-carrying capacity, with lower costs compared to legacy technologies, and immunity from the many disturbances that can afflict electrical wires and wireless communication links. Information technology topics will cover the invention and development of the laser, the production of very pure glass, how fiber optics works, and how fiber optics is deployed in next-generation telecommunications systems.
