Fiber-Optic Essentials

This virtual fiber optics course will allow you to learn the fundamentals and dig into the nuts and bolts of this growing field from the comfort of your own home and on your own time. A live instructor guides this asynchronous course at every turn of your learning.

The course consists of ten chapters, each with videos, discussions, and quizzes. A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to all students who successfully complete and pass all chapters and quizzes, including a coursewide capstone project. The course should take you no more than 32 hours to complete; this varies with your knowledge base. The course will remain live to you for six months.

At the completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define the terms used
  • Discuss how fiber is used in communication
  • Name and define components and transmission systems
  • Interpret specifications
  • Design a network
  • Recommend installation methods

Optional FOA Certification

Upon completion of the course you will be eligible to take the online Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) exam. You will need to provide sufficient proof of hands-on experience in the field; this can come in the form of a letter of recommendation from a shift manager or supervisor. There is an additional $60 cost for the FOA CFOT exam. The exam consists of 100 questions, you must receive a score of 70% or above to pass the exam. A CFOT certificate will be mailed to you. You will also receive under separate cover additional information from the FOA.
